Water and Salt Italian Popular Tales by Thomas Frederick Crane (1885):
There was a king and 3 daughters. One day they were at the table and he said lets see which one of you loves me.
The oldest said she loves him with all her eyes.
The middle said she loves him with her heart.
The youngest said she loves him as much as salt and water.
The king was stunned and called to have her killed.
The other sisters gave the executioners a dog and one of the younger sisters clothing items and told them to kill the dog and leave the sister in a cave.
They brought back the dogs tongue and the clothing garment and presented it to the king.
A magician found her and took her and a kings son soon fell in love with her. The magician said she must kill him the day before the wedding. Then she must invite 3 kings to the wedding including her father. There she must offer water and salt to everyone but her father.
The king could not eat his meal without salt and water.
When he finally realized it was his daughter she explained to him about the salt and water and he asked for forgiveness and lived happily ever after.
