Reading Notes: Celtic Tales, Part B

Brewery of Eggshells Celtic Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs with illustrations by John D. Batten (1892):
A man and women had twins. One day the mother got called away to the neighbors house and left the babies alone. She did not like doing this because of the haunting of the street. She hurried back as fast as she could. One her way back she some elves in blue coats walking across the street. When she returned everything seemed fine with the babies. Then the parents noticed that their babies were not growing. The mother went and talked to the old wise man and he told her exactly what to do to see if they were her babies. He told her to put eggshells on fire and leave them outside the door. If the babies said something too advanced then they were not her kids. She did what he said and sure enough they were not. She threw them in the lake like the old man said and the elves went after their babies. The real babies were returned and everything went back to normal.
