Week 3 Story: The Large Adventure

A young boy was out wondering the fields and forest near his home. He was listening to the birds and the trees and all the sounds surrounding him. Eventually the young boy noticed a large hill off in the distance. He wondered over to hill and spotted what appear to be a tree, but missing its branches. He made his way over to investigate the mysterious tree.

All of the sudden the tree and the hill were moving up and up. The boy found himself a hundred feet into the sky. The young boy was very confused as to what just happened until he realized something shocking.

He was standing on the head of a unicorn!
The young boy was startled at first but had no way of getting down safely.

Once the unicorn noticed the boy he apologized for startling him and wanted to know if he wanted to go on an adventure.

Hesitant but willing to go along for the ride, the young boy and unicorn set off for an adventure. They began by visiting all of the unicorns’ favorite lands and seas. They even met a friendly lion that tagged along on the adventure with them.
He told them many stories of things he had seen in the lands around them.
The boy was amazed by how much more he could see being so high up and how much he learned about the lands that had always been around him.
They explored all day long and saw so many new and exciting places.

After a day full fun and adventures, it was time for the boy and unicorn to say goodbye.
The unicorn took the boy back home and let him down safely.
They said goodbye and went separate ways.

Years later the boy, now much older, became king and told the tales of his adventures with the unicorn.

Authors Note:
I chose to go off of the story "From Shepard-Boy to King" in the Jewish and Fairy Tales section. The story starts off similar by a young boy wondering the forest listening to all the sounds and stumbling up a hill with no leaves or branches. In both my story and the original the boy walks up the hill and gets shot up into the sky and realized the tree is the horn of a unicorn. After this point the the stories take a very different approach. The original then involves a mean lion, also the king of the animals,  demands the boy get down and bow to him. As the unicorn is lowering him down, suddenly out of nowhere a deer appears and swoops the boy onto his back takes off running to get the boy away from the lion and back home. Once the boy is back home he does become king later in his life in both stories and tells the tale of the unicorn, deer, and lion.

I think the writing was done really well and the length of the story was perfect. There were a lot of details, which helped me along while I read the story. Overall, I really enjoyed reading your story and I hope to read more soon!

  2. Hi Katlyn! This was a great story! I like how whimsical and fairytale-like it was. It made it fun to read! I think that this story could have expanded a little more, but overall it was fantastic! I like the switches that you made from the original to your own story. If the opportunity arises, it would be cool to have the grown up boy, now King, go back into the forest and meet the unicorn again!
