Reading Notes: Jewish Fairy Tales

The Quarrel of the Cat and Dog (Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends by Gertrude Landa, 1919):
The dog and the cat used to be best friends. They used each other for company to help get food. Eventually winter came and the two realized they no longer were helping each other and the cat decided it would be best if they split up. The dog was upset but agreed and they took an oath never to cross path again. The cat took off for for Adams house snd stayed there to hunt mice for Adam. The dog took several different adventures and none ended well. Eventually the dog also ended up at Adams house and had to live with the cat again. The cat was infuriated and decided they could never be friends again and it continues today.

From Shepherd-Boy to King (Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends by Gertrude Landa, 1919):
A young boy was out on a plain listening to all the noises around him. Eventually he saw a very large hill and as he approached he saw a tree on the summit. However the tree had no branches and no leaves. Eventually he made it to the tree and noticed that there was no vegetation or rocks around. He also could not dig into the hill. Soon the hill began to rise near the clouds and he realized that he was standing near the horn of a unicorn. He was wondering how he would get back on the ground when he heard a lions roar. The lion demanded the uniform bow to him for he was the king of beasts. As the unicorn bowed the young boy was able to hop off but was confronted by the lion. Running towards them was a deer who let the boy jump on his back and ran him towards safety. The deer dropped the boy off at a village and distracted the lion while the boy went home. Later on the boy became the king of Israel.
